VinLink Integration with Modular Solutions

Modular Solutions integrates with VinLink to populate vehicle data from a valid 17-character VIN or serial number inside configured underwriting workflows. The integration reduces manual entry, improves consistency and speeds up vehicle-related risks processing.

VinLink integration with Modular Solutions

About VinLink

VinLink™ is a product of ESP Data Solutions, Inc., a software and data company founded in 1995. VinLink™ was launched in 2003 as the first internet-accessible VIN decoder with a database of over 5,000 OEM manufacturers and sources vehicle data directly from manufacturers and NHTSA. The platform is updated weekly and requires no downloads or patches.

Within Modular Solutions, VinLink is used to help insurers, MGAs, and brokers capture and apply vehicle information more efficiently during underwriting and policy entry. It is enabled per client and per product.

What the VinLink Integration Helps You Do

1

Reduce manual VIN-based data entry.

2

Populate vehicle fields automatically.

3

Catch mistyped VINs before a lookup is requested.

4

Improve consistency across underwriting workflows.

5

Keep staff working inside the platform – no second system or screen to open.

6

Streamline vehicle-related risk intake for configured products.

Vehicle Data the VinLink Integration Returns

The integration reads ten values from the VinLink report and applies them to matching questions on the risk:

  1. Model year
  2. Make
  3. Model
  4. Vehicle class
  5. Vehicle type
  1. Engine type
  2. Engine make
  3. Horsepower
  4. Length
  5. Length unit

Values are written only where the product has a corresponding question. Fields that are not configured, and answers that do not match an allowed option on a controlled-answer field, are left untouched rather than forced into the record.

How the VinLink Integration Works

A valid VIN triggers the lookup. When a user enters or changes a 17-character VIN or serial number on a supported risk, and the product and risk group are configured for vehicle information, Modular Solutions requests a vehicle report from VinLink automatically. No one has to remember to run a lookup.

The number is validated locally first. Modular Solutions checks the VIN before anything is sent, including a check-digit calculation. A number that fails validation is rejected at that point and no report is requested.

Returned values populate the risk. The ten supported values are applied to the questions that exist on that risk, so users move straight on rather than rekeying details from another source.

Results are cached against the VIN. Each VIN is looked up once. A later lookup on the same vehicle returns the stored result.

Unmatched lookups are silent. Where no match is found, the lookup is unsuccessful, or the integration is not enabled for the product, fields are simply left as they are and users continue entering details manually.

The lookup runs during new business and mid-term changes.

Why VIN Decoding Matters for Insurance Workflows

For insurers, MGAs and brokers, vehicle-related underwriting depends on accurate data capture. Typing vehicle details by hand is slow and introduces variation between users and submissions. It also raises the chance of an error. A VIN decoder integration removes that step which improves intake speed and data quality feeding downstream underwriting and rating.

Key Benefits of the VinLink Integration

Less manual entry: Core vehicle attributes populate from the VIN a user is already entering.

Faster intake and quoting: Teams move through vehicle-related workflows faster with less manual processing.

More consistent risk data: Key fields are captured the same way on every submission.

Better workflow experience: Users stay inside the Modular Solutions platform rather than switching between systems or screens.

Built for configured vehicle-related workflows: Designed specifically for vehicle-related underwriting use cases, including vehicles, trailers and recreational vehicles. It is built into the product itself.

The integration benefits all types of insurance organizations: Anyone handling vehicle-related underwriting workflows, looking to reduce manual entry, wanting faster intake, and improved consistency and quality in data.

Frequently Asked Questions About the VinLink Integration

What data does the VinLink integration return in Modular Solutions?

Ten values: model year, make, model, vehicle class, vehicle type, engine type, engine make, horsepower, length and length unit. These are applied to the questions that exist on the risk being entered.

Does the integration reduce manual data entry?

Yes. Where the product and risk group are configured for it, the integration populates the ten supported fields from a valid VIN or serial number, removing the separate lookup and rekeying step.

Does the integration work for every product?

No. It is enabled per client and available only for configured products and risk groups in Modular Solutions.

When does the lookup run?

When a 17-character VIN or serial number is entered or changed on a supported risk, during new business and mid-term changes.

What happens if no vehicle data is found?

Nothing is written to the risk and no message is shown. Users continue entering details manually. The same applies if a lookup is unsuccessful or the integration is not enabled for that product.

Does the same VIN get looked up more than once?

No. Results are cached against the VIN, so each vehicle is looked up once and later lookups return the stored result.

Does the integration require users to leave Modular Solutions?

No. The lookup and the field population both happen inside the normal Modular Solutions workflow.
